Why is this plane taxiing backward? It also moved out of the gate without the help of a tug. The player didn’t issue a 'pushback' command; it just pushed back and taxied on its own. Is this a bug?

I had this issue as well when playing with that airport you are using. I've realized you need to assign the gate properly after they get off the runway, especially if it's arriving runways 21L you have to assign the gate once they finish taxi off 21R, because if you assign it early it will request for a gate even though you already did. So it will continue to taxi and go to the gate you've assigned but instead it will show "Taxi to Gate" I've had this problem too.
